Michael Siporin Levine-visiting artist
Here at UConn, the Fine Arts department created the Counterproof Press, which is a collaboration between the Creative Writing Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Printmaking, Graphic Design, Illustration/Animation, and the Design Center Studio in the Department of Art and Art History, in the School of Fine Arts. This collaboration creates studio projects through which students, faculty, and visiting artists and scholars from various mediums of art collaborate to produce limited edition art objects, artifacts, and publications.
On Thursday April 6 Counterproof press hosted a UConn grad student, Michael Siporin Levine. Michael is a visual artist working in printmaking, drawing, and video installations. He graduated from UConn with a BFA in studio art in 2011. He acquired his MFA from the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia in 2014 and taught an experimental printmaking course at Knox College in Galesburg, IL.
Michael uses a mixture of observation and process to create imagery with open-ended narratives. Through technique and process, he allows an initial idea to change and evolve. Using drawing as a base, he lets process inform decision-making while working in various printmaking techniques, collage, video, and animation. Working with and against a technique encourages his experimentation with the medium, allowing himself a greater opportunity for chance and discovery to play a role in the process.
I enjoyed his work because most of his work is a performance installation, he uses the old projectors to create these simple animations, he also sings western country songs to these animations. My freshman year i created something similar to his work. We cut out animal silhouettes out of black paper ad had to use the app “Vine” to record short stock motion like movements. His work is vary minimalistic , which i like because you don't have to think as hard at what he's trying to tell the viewer.
