FROM THE DIRECTOR:
MISSION STATEMENT

The American university is changing. Resources are shifting away from the humanities and toward science, technology, engineering, and math.

The American career is changing. Those with college degrees will change jobs more frequently than past generations. They will navigate a workplace of unprecedented complexity.

America is changing. Identities, even realities, clash across political, cultural, and geographical boundaries.

Humanities House is where a select group of UConn students meet these changes head on. Humanities House students draw connections between the disparate parts of the curriculum, and the broader university experience, by reflecting on the human condition in this place and time. Members of the Learning Community develop and practice skills of holistic thinking and communication that make them adaptable and marketable across a wide variety of careers. And Humanities House students reflect and shape the identities and realities around them with empathy and precision, drawing upon the arsenal of tools provided by the perspective of the humanities.

FROM THE STUDENTS:
WHO WE ARE

Welcome to the Humanities House website! We are one of UConn’s living Learning Communities. The Learning Community experience is an integrative and unique one, designed to bring together students, staff, and faculty with similar interests and goals in a supportive environment to help you get the most out of your first year at UConn and beyond. Humanities House is, to put it broadly, an inquiry into the intricacies and complexity of human nature through the academic study of the humanities disciplines. More specifically, we take classes together, attend events, and conduct important conversations about what it means to be a student and individual in today’s society. We strive to develop critical thinking skills that are lifelong and interdisciplinary, just as Humanities House is.

Starting your college career is one of the most exciting times in your life. As with any new experience, there are bound to be some uncertainties and tough moments here and there. UConn’s Learning Community program is widely recognized as being among the most comprehensive and leading programs of its kind for underclassmen. The Community aspect of Learning Communities is something Humanities House prides itself on fulfilling. Chances are, the people you meet in Humanities House will be your friends and mentors throughout your time at UConn. We are also one of UConn’s smaller Learning Communities, enabling us to make the large UConn campus feel much smaller.

Many current Humanities House students are featured in the “People” section of this website. If you want to know why Humanities House stood out to our current members and the benefits HH has provided them, check out their short bios!

Sincerely, The HH Team
